Crow Feathers + Bird Totem

I’ve been obsessed with feathers since I can remember!  They have always been sacred to me and for decades I’ve placed prayers on finding them or running into them on my path. Living in Portland, Oregon there are an abundance of crow feathers as there are a high population of both crows and ravens. I collect crow and raven feathers as they cross my path. I wear them and adorn them on my desk and home. I wrap them in sage and herbs, and tie them as offerings to my Ancestors.  Feathers no matter what bird I will always hold sacred.

I have learned and studied the difference in bird calls between crows and ravens. When I see them flying I can also note their difference, however, I am learning which feathers are crow and raven.

Crows are smaller birds than ravens and have a  long and short smooth “caw” sound when calling while ravens have a very peculiar “croak” bird sound.  Ravens are rarely in heavily populated areas while crows are dense in cities like Portland, Oregon.  A crow has a fan-shaped feathered tail while a raven has a wedge-shaped tail and longer wings and feathers due to their larger size.

Bird Totem Meaning

Bird totems are mystical carrying great mythology and lore. They represent the element of air, the thunder, storms, rain, and lightening.  They bring messages to humans from the angels and heavenly realm.  Birds are symbolic of light and darkness, clarity and mysticism, both good and bad omens. They are teachers with wise and creative powers and dark, under worldly, destructive powers.  Birds are synonyms with freedom and flight, intuition, gods and goddess, medicine and healing, angelic and faery kingdoms, change and transformation.

Birds carry deep sense of navigation and knowing to migrate from climate to climate. They know which route to take and where to fly. Listen to your inner guidance system, trust your self, and move with great intention and knowing that your call is the right path and right way. Develop deep intuition and purpose. Use your heightened empathy and sensitivity as your inner guidance system. Learn to adapt and be light. Keep a light heart free from drama, let go of pain, and the past. Mediate often and be okay with your self with others and alone.

Symbology and the Language of the Universe

I’ve always believed in ‘signs’ some call omens. They are the way the “Universe” spirits, Elementals, Ancestors, Gods and Goddesses, and the Higher Self speak to you. It is through this kind of symbology that a very different kind of language and exchange occurs.

childhood musings with the earth goddess

As a kid, I was in touch with the magical invisible! I’d see the dead and mystical animals, know which plants and berries to eat while playing in the forest alone. I had a keen sense of listening and knowing well beyond my years so much so that my sisters would ask me psychic questions to prophesy dreams and my mother treated me as if I was already an adult equal to her knowledge and maturity.

I opened my tiny self up to the world of magic, shamanism, and indigenous memory.

I played well with other children and equally enjoy my alone time especially in the nearby forests where nature became my guide, mentor and teacher. I’d find myself exploring all the forest had to offer rolling down hills in laughter and laying alone in open grassy meadows staring into the sky. I’d cloud watch and see them take form as faces, animals, and creative ideas. In fact, nature was very much my second but most powerful teacher and mentor.

I’d run through the woods imagining I was once indigenous to the land knowing everything there was to know about the secrets of the Earth and I secretly thanked Mother Earth for her generous gifts and protection from harm and danger. Under a pine tree, I learned about pranayama (breathing) and had my first meditation at the age of eight years old. I was suffering from childhood trauma and thought if I could just breathe it would save my life from stress, worry and verbal-emotional abuse. It did! And in this way, like cause and effect I learned the gifts of vibration and frequency. I opened my tiny self up to the world of magic, shamanism, and indigenous memory.  Because, I also had psychic gifts, I’d play games telling the future,  and go into shamanic trance through the human body, through tunnels and vortices, and travel the earth as a bird.  My childhood, although often traumatic was joyful, full of mystery, magic play and teachings, and consumed with art and love of scholarship. It is here I was rooted often in silence and solitude, the wonderful world of symbology and higher forms of communication with the divine and mystical.

Feather Meaning and Geese – Goose Animal Totem

Finding Geese Feathers

Birds are the messengers of the Gods, sky creatures full of wisdom, symbology, sacred travel and spiritual knowledge

Feathers are from the lofty beings and they are symbols of Inspiration (spirit/breath) and freedom (travel to roam). They represent the Air and Mentalism. They are associated with the Goddess and Gods of Heaven. Feathers are feelings of fertility, growth, gratitude and thanksgiving.

When you are gifted feathers you share in the web of empowerment to receive messages from sacred forms of communication and also give and present this information to others in the form of art, poetry, writing, singing, even dance on a spiritual level. You are often a channel between worlds of the hidden and the seen, sometimes a mystic, psychic, telepath, and channel for the divine. You can be a very sensitive empath who feels, sees, and knows what others experience and provide wisdom and clarity where they may not be able to see, feel or know.

Daeira – Underworld Agriculture Titan Goddess of The Eleusinian Mysteries

DAEIRA (Daira) – Okeanid Nymph, the Titan Spring Water Guide, the “Knowing One,”  Goddess & Mother of Demigod Eleusis

Titan mythology predates Olympian mythology because it originates prior to the first floods recorded in the Bile and other sacred texts dating in history and mythology. Further research shows that the Titans were second generation beings only after the Primordial Gods. Primordial Gods in Greek mythology were the “first born” primal gods and goddesses born from the Void of Khaos (Chaos) the Great Mother who preceded the Universe. Many of the early Greeks particularly the Athenians whose etymologic name is surprisingly not of Greek origin boasted of being aboriginal (autochthonian) Greeks and linked to ancestors of the Primordial age.

Sea animals (dolphins, hyppocampi). Amphora, red-figured Terracotta (6th-1st BCE), from Caniao. Greek Hermitage Museum

Titan mythology include Chthonian (Underworld)  gods and goddesses including Nymphs (nature spirits) split into 5 different groups; Naiades were the Oceanids associated with fountains springs and wells, the Nephelai were cloud nymphs, Leimonides were nymphs of the pasture, the Anthousai were the Oceanid nymphs of flowers, and the Aurai were nymphs of the water found in breezes. The ancient mysteries of the Underworld had a direct link to cults of knowledge of earthly Agriculture. The Eleusinian Mysteries were secret initiatory rites and priesthoods taught in ancient Greece in the town of Eleusis, West Attica in Southern Greece.

DAEIRA is an Okeanid-nymph of the town in Eleusis in West Attika (Attica), (Southern Greece). She is a Titan Greek goddess of aboriginal origin of Eleusis of early ancient Greeks living in the region prior to the first flood.  She is associated with the Goddess Hekate (Hecate, The Triple Goddess), Kore (The Maiden), and Persephone (Core/Kore, which may have also been a titles. Daeira was also the mother of the first king of the town Eleusis giving birth to a Demi God or Goddess by the God Hermes or the first ruler of Attika Ogygus.

Eleusinian Mysteries, Bee, Demeter cult. Protectress of the Heart. Minoan Bee Goddess, golden plaque, British Museum. Found at Camiros, Rhodes, 7th century BCE. The Melissae, also known as The Thriae (also Thriai), a triad of divinatory Priestesses in ancient Greece, were originally Nymphs. The Thriae were able to see the future, interpret signs and omens provided by Nature and the Earth. They taught the God Apollo this art. Their names are Daphnis (Laurel), Kleodora (Famed for Her Gift) and Melaina (The Black).

Daeira was connected with the rites of the Eleusinian Mysteries. Her name means “Knowing One” or “Teacher” from the Greek verb daô which appears to connect her with the instruction of initiates in the secret knowledge of the Mysteries. The name Daeira was also an Eleusinian title of the goddess Persephone. Daeira may also have been identified with the Eleusinian Hekate who, according to some, was a consort of Hermes Khthonios (the Guide of the Dead). She may have been the Naiad of the town’s famous well, or springs, where Demeter first rested upon entering Eleusis.  (Source:

The Dove, Sacred to Demeter also known as Ceres (Core/Kore) believed to be the founder of The Eleusinian Mysteries and an Agrarian cult goddess. Representing Earth, Harvest, Agriculture and Fertility. She is of the 12 Olympians (offspring of the Titans).

According to Pausanias (i. 38. § 7) she was a daughter of Oceanus, and became by Hermes the mother of Eleusis; but others called her a sister of Styx; while a third account represents her as identical with Aphrodite, Demeter, Hera, or Persephone.
